Often the ritual of 'Handfasting' is performed, whereby the couple's hands are bound by a natural
woven thread, fibre or cloth, and just before the 'Giving of Rings' the
binding is slipped off with the knot still intact, signifying the fact
they will always be 'bound together in marriage'. (Many couples who have
a civil ceremony today, just
incorporate Handfasting into their ceremony without any of the other
traditions.)

Julie and Aurelio celebrate their 20 year Wedding Anniversary with a Handfasting Renewal of Vows with Marilyn Verschuure at the romantic hinterland Ruffles Lodge on the Gold Coast.

Here is a beautiful Handfasting verse:
Now you are bound one to the
other
With a tie not easy to break.
Take the time of binding
Before the final vows are made
To learn what you need to know -
To grow in wisdom and love.
That your marriage/union will be strong
That your love will last
In this life and beyond.

Handfasting is conducted in a circle it has no beginning and no end, it is eternal. The circle is a universal emblem of wholeness and completion. It symbolises continuity, eternity, completion and speechlessness. As it represents what is complete and unbroken, it also stands for everlasting love. The circle is often aligned with the cardinal points of the compass -north, south, east and west.
